Legal Advisory Discussion Questions

Hi, everyone, my name’s Alison and I will be discussing safety in field after receiving some tips from my MSW supervisor.

0:03

One big thing right now would be covered protocols and being just aware of masks when visiting with clients and maintaining social distancing.

0:18

And then also the place that I’m at does home visits with older adults.

0:34

So it’s important to just be aware of the population that we serve as far as covid protocols and that they might be more high risk.

0:43

But as far as entering people’s homes with worrying about things like violence,

1:00

there’s generally less risk with the population, the aging adult population.

1:09

And but there’s of course, you always have to take certain precautions when doing home visits,

1:18

maybe just let someone know where you’re going to be and if you’re going to be by yourself,

1:26

put it on your calendar and then also just kind of following your gut in certain situations and making smart decisions if something feels off.

1:31

And then this is also something that I have figured out in my job as a case manager,

1:47

which before covid involved face to face visits with all my clients monthly.

2:00

So some things that I would try to do is keep a safe distance from the client and then also having an escape plan, being close to the door if needed.

2:07

Make sure the client can’t barricade you in things like that.

2:24

Make sure you’re aware of your surroundings. If there’s any weapons in the area, things just try to be smart and and use your instincts.

2:29

So if there is a situation that does feel unsafe, my supervisor did say that, you know, you are free to walk out.

2:42

So excuse yourself from the situation. Maybe give them a phone call to further discuss the issue.

2:53

And so I feel like just with my background, that I have a lot of.

3:06

I have a lot of experience with that, so with my field placement,

3:17

my my safety plan will just be the same and then also use some of these tips that my MSW supervisor gave me.

3:23

And also, it’s good to have good to have numbers in your phone for your supervisors and maybe depending on the population you work with,

3:33

the crisis numbers for the county and things like that. Thank you for watching.

As Christopher Gardner Here’s an excerpt from Field Log number two,

0:00

the practice framework that best facilitates resolution, the practice challenges ecological systems theory.

0:04

This theory has, one observed people in multiple environments or systems to fully understand the behavior.

0:11

The different scenarios I’m encountering in these trainings is helping me look through a critical thinking lens,

0:17

how environments and systems affect one’s behavior. Another practice framework that may also be relevant is contingency theory.

0:22

This theory. This theory parallels ecological systems theory in ways that different individual

0:29

outcomes are contingent on a variety of specific situational factors.

0:36

This theory also considers all the internal and external influences that are contributing to a client’s problem.

0:40

The training they have taken have explored the many ways.

0:46

How behavior exhibited through the strength to strength I’ve experienced in my client system is the availability

0:49

of free trainings for social workers and the generosity of social workers to innately help others in need.

0:57

It reminds me of the reason of why I wanted to enter this field in the first place.

1:02

People helping people are the essential backbone of social work.

1:06

This is an excerpt a little bit about the different frameworks they used within this week’s Fehlberg.

1:12

Hope Everyone Were.

Hi, I’m doing my internship at Cityview Community School and the Minneapolis Public School District at a school,

0:02

there’s a lot of safety plans that are put in place to keep all staff members and all students safe.

0:10

The first one that I learned about at my internship was actually during their workshop week on their staff meetings.

0:15

And our group was actually supposed to do a presentation over at this policy symposium.

0:23

And we talked about first is the react policy, and that stands for recognizing the situation,

0:30

evaluating all the options, taking action, communicating and then taking inventory.

0:36

And this are the different codes. So code yellow is when there’s a threat that is outside of the school and it’s on immediate threat to the school.

0:46

So like an example, this would be like maybe the police that are pursuing a vehicle, the neighborhood around the school.

0:56

They would call the principal and the principal would enact a code yellow and a code yellow

1:03

is where students and staff members cannot go outside for any other activity inside.

1:08

The school will resume as normal. And for the other one that’s more serious is a lock down, which is a code red,

1:13

also the code red is when there’s a safety concern that’s regarding a potential threat to the school.

1:23

So, for example, this could be if the police were pursuing a suspect and that suspect fled and is now on school property.

1:29

And during this time, if the lockdown is act in the school and all those activities should seize,

1:37

so everyone should stop, they should be down quiet and out of sight.

1:44

So it is like there is no students or staff in the classroom and they should remain there and hidden and quiet until that lockdown is lifted.

1:48

I was talking to my supervisor about if they’ve ever had any code reds because she’s been there for six years.

1:59

She said a code red has only happened once and that was when there was a suspect being chased and he tried to get into the school.

2:04

And so they enacted the lockdown. And the riots last year had a few Portillo’s slummy, like no staff member and kids could go out to recess.

2:12

So just knowing what to do.

2:23

And I think that’s really important, too, because I do leave to go to my job after I’m there for a few hours in the morning.

2:24

So knowing that if there’s a little, then I would need to inform my bosses that I couldn’t leave.

2:30

And then a code green is when everything is deemed that it’s all clear the other ones that we haven’t had an opportunity to do yet,

2:37

but they will be doing throughout the school year for safety plans are also five fire drills, one tornado drill and then five lockdown drills.

2:45

And those numbers are all decided by the state and they’re all mandatory.

2:54

So they will be practicing those.
