Fictional Autobiography Project – 200 pts.
PROMPT: Create a fictional character from a culture or subculture different than your own, living in a specific time and geographic location in the United States. Tell this character’s story through his or her thoughts, words, and social experiences. To bring this character to life, illustrate his or her attitudes, values, and beliefs, particularly those associated with his or her culture through specific language, events, and actions. In addition, examine how this character experiences a sense of power as well as limitations as a member of a cultural group or subgroup in mainstream U.S. society. The reader or viewer of your project should get a strong sense of your fictional character living everyday life as an actual member of a specific cultural group or subgroup.
FORMAT: You can tell your character’s story through a paper (a narrative or memoir written in first person), a video or screenplay (including some dialog), a newspaper article (extended feature piece with first person quotes), a personal diary, a radio series or extended interview like NPR’s This American Life series, a collection of poetry, a storytelling presentation using PowerPoint, Prezi, or other slide-based application, or animation.
SUBMITTING THE ASSIGNMENT: If you write a narrative, memoir, newspaper article, personal diary, poem or do a PowerPoint then you will post this assignment on the Turnitin website (see instructions under the Course resources module).
If you created a video then you will post it on Canvas.

RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS:
- Consult the CPD 160 Library Research Guide and the research power point for this project posted on Canvas.
- Review the concepts and terms in the CPD 160 Outline listed below competencies in this handout. These are the concepts to reflect in your character’s day-to-day life and can be effective categories to help you organize your research notes.
- Include an APA style references page with a minimum of four college level sources you consulted to learn about your fictional character’s culture or subculture.
- Include a minimum of two library database sources as shown in the “Where to Find SCC’s Academic Library Databases slides (a pdf in Canvas) and as required by the assignment rubric.
- Other research resources can include documentaries, podcasts, and relevant films with authentic settings. You are required to post your project to turnitin.com to check for plagiarism of your research material.
