Application Assignment #3: Multiple/Mixed Methods (Using Gender, Age, and Health as a case study)

For this week’s assignment, follow the regular instructions (below) — and focus on Mojola and Colleagues’ approach to using mixed methods. This study is considered by many sociologists to be a prime example of how to successfully apply multiple methods in one piece of research. Using multiple methods in research is incredibly tricky — a truly difficult, yet fruitful, task. Why do you think this piece is so well regarded among experts? Why do you think the researchers decided to use both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer their research questions? Do you think choosing either a qualitative OR quantitative approach (instead of both) would have worked better? What do you see as the strengths of their decision to use mixed methods? What do you see as the weaknesses of using the approach?

APPLICATION ASSIGNMENT: The purpose of these assignments is to demonstrate your ability to apply what you learned throughout the week. You will accomplish this by using what you learned (textbook) to analyze the sociological content and research methods from an actual social scientific study. Also, pay attention to and discuss the different aspects of the social world you think the researcher is studying (here: gender, age, health).

INSTRUCTIONS: You should first read the assigned article for the week (PDF) — take notes while you read — mark where you see examples of concepts you learned about from the textbook. Taking these notes will help A LOT when you go to write up your analysis. Next, you will write a 3-page analysis of the article. Follow these guidelines:

*Your assignment should be 3 pages (minimum), double-spaced, 12-point font, with one-inch margins.

*Begin your assignment by reviewing/summarizing the sociological content and key methodological points from the assigned article (one page).

*Next, give a critical analysis of the article’s methods (2 pages — this should be the majority of your paper). In your analysis, you should point out where you see the author(s) demonstrating concepts (sociological and methodological) you learned about in the week’s textbook reading(s). Throughout your paper, you should include direct connections to the week’s textbook reading(s). Don’t forget to cite (use in-text citations, including page numbers, for the textbook — no need for a separate reference page).

*In your analysis, you can discuss aspects of the article and methods that you found compelling and explain why. Consider whether or not you think the author(s) methods are robust. Include things such as: do you agree with their chosen methods? Do you think they were appropriately applied? What do you think was strong about their methodological approach? Was there anything you thought was weak about their methods? Why? Were you left with questions or concerns? Or were you thoroughly convinced by their approach? What aspects of society were they studying? Do you think their study was a good way to perform research on those aspects of society? Why or why not?

*Before you submit your assignment, be sure to review it to be sure that you followed the instructions, including USING IN-TEXT CITATIONS, especially for your textbook. If you do not use in-text citations for your textbook (showing that you are making connections between what you’ve learned and what you’re reading in the article, your grade will be significantly impacted).
