You will write a 3-page report about race, gentrification, and resistance in your city/metro area. Using current news media reports, op eds, and data, you will research the impact gentrification/displacement has had or continues to have on a historically black neighborhood (or community of color as some of these spaces are black/and) and discuss any efforts local community groups or individuals are engaged in to claim space and resist the tide of displacement.

Here in nearby Oakland, where racism, redlining, and restrictive covenants, historically relegated black residents to West Oakland before migration and challenges to residential segregation led led to pocket of black neighborhoods elsewhere around the city. Over time, existing immigrant communities and new waves of immigration would reshape the cultural and ethnic geography of the city, all while claims to public space and belonging would be dominated by white wealthier residents and the policies and police they used to enforce it. One recent example was the “BBQ Becky” incident at Lake Merritt during which a white woman confronted a group of black picnickers who were barbecuing lakeside of breaking park rules. Upon being rebuffed, the woman called the police and attempted to have the picnickers stopped and punished. A clear sign of the ills of gentrification among many black Oaklanders, a cookout was staged in response to assert black claims to belonging in the city and in resistance to the push-out by newer white residents and gentrification, both of which have continued to rewrite black relationships to space, including who can take up space and what can be done there.

As you begin your research, try and locate at least 2-3 different credible sources (local news sites like LA Times, SF Chronicle, as well as larger media outlets like the NY Times, WaPo, The Atlantic, NPR, New Yorker, Black Perspectives (Links to an external site.), any academic journal article or book from SJSU library (Links to an external site.))* from which to draw information and discuss what is happening locally and more broadly with black neighborhood and gentrification across the country. Extra points if the author or viewpoint is black (first-hand, insider experience is as important as scientifically extracted data).

Once you begin writing, think about the historical significance of the neighborhood/community’s development (Did racism, redlining, and restrictive covenants play a role in its origin?), any past changes that may have impacted it (Did industry and transportation infrastructure shape or reshape its boundaries?), and what is being lost today culturally, economically, politically, and socially as homes and cultural institutions are left and new businesses and residents are moving in (How are older residents dealing with the arrival of “gentrifiers” and how have these new arrivals responded to older residents and claims to place?). The report should be written in essay format (avoid writing in bullet points) and should be critically written (while this is not a personal response paper, you are allowed to incorporate your perspective, especially if you have witnessed gentrification firsthand and/or are talking about changes happening in your own neighborhood).

Is there an active effort to try and create policies or programs specifically for longterm residents to avoid displacement?
If so, how do these policies or programs plan to address black homeownership or business startups?
For those who have been displaced or who have voluntarily left, what cities or regions are they settling in?
What kind of future do black residents see for themselves and their community?
