On the YouTube clip featuring Peter Senge, he discusses his belief that human dynamics work is an essential contribution to society. Senge goes on to explain two ways in which he believes human dynamics are vital. The first way is that it is important to understand yourself and there is never a setting in which it will not be important. Senge mentions that human dynamics are less about fitting into a certain box and more about providing a deep insight into who we are as individuals. The second way that human dynamics are vital is that it allows us to understand each other. Senge believes that once you learn human dynamics you will never be able to forget it entirely (Humandynamicsintl, 2010).
In an article written by Robin Boyle, there is a reference to Peter Senge and his book The Fifth Discipline. Senge believes there is great value in using team learning as opposed to individuals learning on their own. An organization can maximize its potential when teams become aligned and work together (Boyle, 2005). This goes together with human dynamics because individuals need to understand themselves and others before they can successfully work together as a team.
I enjoyed what Senge had to say, and I confess I have never consciously given much thought to human dynamics. If I had to say I was surprised about anything he said in the clip, I guess it would be the part where he said you will never forget human dynamics entirely. There really was nothing in the clip that disappointed me. There are so many tools out there to help us better understand people and it all begins with a desire to learn and be understanding.

Week 4 Discussion – Human Dynamics, Development, and Systems

While I highly respect Peter Senge’s work to describe how everything can be explained as systems of patterns, and patterns of events through his book The Fifth Discipline, in the 3:10 video of him talking about Human Dynamics he really hasn’t said enough about the topic in that clip to identify with what he was explaining or why he would describe it as “simple, elegant and powerful.” I’ve transcribed his words below to emphasize my opinion – yes, he says the words Human Dynamics but he never put any statement out that to assist the listener with identifying with the definition of it or what it means. That is what both surprised and disappointed me. Otherwise, I am optimistic that Human Dynamics is an important tool for understanding human beings in every setting and organization, and this will be something that we would never really forget as a way to help myself and other to work together.
Here is the transcript I captured while listening to Peter Senge in the clip:
· There’s not setting which it’s not important to understand yourself.
· Human Dynamics gives us a sense of who I am and not what box I fit into. It’s completely unique because it’s developmental, it’s not the box I am in but the way I am and the way I grow.
· In fact Human Dynamics is the type of theory of the basic drives of human development which is that all of us are basically questing to be whole.
· All of us are on our own unique path towards all the integration of all the different facets that make human beings human beings.
· The second area in which Human Dynamics I think is vital, is understanding one another, because no matter what setting we’re in, there’s very few things that you and I do by ourselves, I mean really by ourselves.
· So whether or not it’s in our families, or whether we’re working, we’re always working with other people.
· And again it can sound almost trite to say, well the more we understand one another, the better we’ll be able to work.
· But the truth of the matter is, that there are very few systems, I don’t think any system or approach that I’ve ever been exposed to, that allows someone to understand others as well as Human Dynamics does.
· There is just a remarkably simple, elegant and powerful way of thinking about one another that Human Dynamics tends to foster.
· I think that one of the things that’s quite striking about Human Dynamics is, I actually think once you learn it, you never forget it.
· And I have a fair amount of evidence, a lot of people I’ve known who’ve gotten into it, and myself…I think that’s a real hallmark of deep insight, is that you never really forget it entirely.
· I think it’s have a huge impact on education.
· I think it’ll have a huge impact in all sorts of organizations, from business organizations to non-profit organizations.
· When you think about one common denominator virtually underlying all institutions, is that these are people trying to figure out how to work together, and that’s not very easy. It’s easy to say, but it’s not actually so easy to do.
· Of all the different approaches I have been exposed to, there is none that gives deeper, more penetrating insights to what distinguishes people, and how we are intrinsically oriented in different ways, and what is necessary to work together, productively!
