Write My Essay For Me

Week Two: Archaeology Project

Next week, you will learn about archaeological methods and research. In preparation, this project requires you to think about how HISTORIC SITES impact the way you evaluate your surroundings here in Champaign. You will consider these topics as you build writing skills by developing material for a Storymap website.

First complete the 2 PREP STEPs (that require no written response or submission). Then complete the 6 STEPS (that require write-ups).

PREP STEP ONE: First, familiarize yourself with the basics of Section 106 (the primary law that protects nationally recognized historic places in the US) and local landmark designation requirements (the requirements for designating a site as historic within Champaign County). This will teach you about what kind of arguments community members need to make if they would like a site to be recognized at the local or national level.

PREP STEP TWO: Look at the Storymap website created by Parkland Students last semester. Click on different tabs and locations to explore stories about historic buildings and sites in Champaign Country. Think about the following questions as you click through each site:

· First, is it officially recognized as a historic site? If so, is the recognition national or local?

· What types of histories does this space celebrate (early settlers, academics, wealthy community members, religious groups, minority groups, industrial production, agricultural production, military history?)

· What groups in the community today might be excited about the histories memorialized by this space?

· Why or why isn’t there an official effort to preserve this space?

· If there have been preservation efforts, have those efforts largely succeeded or failed?

STEP ONE: SELECTING SITES

For this project, choose TWO historic sites within Champaign County to research. One site should be an OFFICIAL HISTORIC SITE (formally recognized either nationally and/or locally through the processes outlined in PREP STEP ONE); the other should be UNOFFICIAL (not formally designated as a historic locally or nationally). Choose sites that you personally find interesting or important.

Before making your selection, insure that you are not picking a site already chosen by another student. Do not choose a site already on the Storymap from PREP STEP TWO. Also, look at the discussion board in the Week Two Folder titled ‘Choosing Sites For the Archaeology Project’. Read the current posts to see which sites students have already claimed. If you accidently select a site already chosen by another student, you will need to redo the assignment.

Once you select two sites not already listed on the discussion board or on the Storymap website, write a post in the discussion board listing the NAME and PHYSICAL ADDRESS of your sites.

STEP TWO: ONLINE RESEARCH AND NOTES

Learn about the sites you have selected by looking for information online from sources that seem reputable to you. As you search, try to collect information about the following questions and take notes. Respond to as many of the questions as you can. Note your source (name, year, url, or organization name). You will need to be able to find the websites where you found this information again in the future.

· Questions related to the OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED historic site you pick:

· What laws protect this property? On what formal lists of historic properties does this property appear?

· When was this property protected? Was the fight to preserve this property long lasting or was it a quick process?

· What groups and institutions fought to protect this property?

· Is there a sign or plaque posted on-site with information about the property? If so, what type of information is presented? Is there information about who authored the sign or plaque?

· Does the property function in any way aside from being a historic site today? Is the space still used (as a residence? community building? etc.)?

· How is this property being positioned within broader narratives about the history of the region?

· Questions related to the UNOFFICIAL historic site you pick:

· How did you learn about this site? Where can information about this site be found?

· Are local groups interested in this site? If so, why are they interested? Why might the site not be officially recognized despite this interest?

· Is there a sign or plaque posted on-site with information about the property? If so, what type of information is presented? Is there information about who authored the sign or plaque?

· How is this property being positioned within broader narratives about the history of the region? Or, if there is not a lot of interest in this property, how might this site be positioned within broader narratives about what is important within this region?

STEP THREE: DRAFT PARAGRAPHS FOR THE STORYMAP

Now that you have collected information about the history and preservation status of your selected buildings, begin to think about what information you would like to present online. Draft a 1-2 paragraph description for EACH site. Refer to the Storymap locations developed by students last semester as a model.

Note: you MUST include the NAME of the site and the PHYSICAL ADDRESS

STEP FOUR:

You will need to find an image of your site to include in your location write-up.

If you would find it enjoyable, I recommend visiting the sites in person. Then, you can take your own photo. This will also help you to consider how information about the site is presented to the public because you will be able to read the signs and plaques present at the site.

If you are unable to visit the site, you can search for a public domain or free use image. Use the guidelines outlined here. Make sure to note the source of your photo in your project submission.

If you are artistically inclined and are unable to take a photo or find a public domain image online, feel free to draw/sketch/paint an image of the building.

STEP FIVE: SUBMIT

Once you have completed all of the steps, print a document with:

-Your notes and sources from STEP TWO

-Your two summaries from STEP THREE

-Your image from STEP FOUR (as a JPG or TIFF)

This submission is due Wednesday October 3rd in class in hard copy.

STEP SIX: REVIEW

After receiving your submission, I will send you comments. You must revise your summaries and images based on these comments. The revisions are due by Monday October 8th during class. Submit to the Archaeology Project Revisions to the Drop Box in the Week Five folder.
