The need to get a deeper insight on project management led to an interview with an IT professional and the answers offered form the basis of this paper. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the project methodology used by the IT professional, outline the role of a business analyst in health IT, describe the application developer skill sets the IT professional use and discuss the quality assurance process and system testing methodology.

In terms of project methodology, the IT professional indicated that the hybrid approach is the best option. The methodology was selected because it leverages the best aspects of agile and waterfall planning (Vijayasarathy & Butler, 2015). Although hybrid approach relies heavily on agile, it utilizes the waterfall planning in providing a clear roadmap that key stakeholders and senior leadership use. The approach is selected because it ensures that the delivered product aligns with stakeholder’s views since they are involved in every step of the project. Additionally, the project is always completed in a reasonable timeframe.  The outcome improvement projects benefit most from the approach because it guides on Gantt chart creation and definition of any dependencies as well as the breakdown of work in phases (Vijayasarathy & Butler, 2015). The chart is then offered to the clinicians and senior leadership who gives a go-ahead. The agile principles are then used to outline the sprints and specify the team members’ commitment.

In line with a business analyst, the IT professional defined them as individuals who analyze an organization’s domain, document the business process and asses how the business model integrates with technology (Fenton, Low, Abrams & Butler-Henderson, 2017).  The role of a business analyst in the health IT projects is to reduce the number of failed IT projects. In essence, the projects fail because of incomprehensible objectives, inadequate resources, communication breakdown, and limited risk management skills. A business

analyst helps in defining the requirement and initiative analysis reducing the likelihood of the project collapsing. The analyst also evaluates, analyze and extract complications and issues linked to the project and then come up with solutions that facilitate the smooth operations of the projects. According to the IT professional, the presence of a business analyst in the department helps because of their two primary skills mainly functional analysis and requirements definition help in efficient budget allocation, especially when working under a tight financial condition (Fenton, Low, Abrams & Butler-Henderson, 2017).  The personnel also explores various business processes, multiple use cases and alternative flows at every point the healthcare professionals come into contact with patient interfaces ensuring that projects are successful.

In terms of applications developer skillset, the IT professional began by stating that in healthcare IT one has to be aware of how data moves through various systems and databases and the regulations that govern the data use. The interviewee pointed out that security is the priority when handling healthcare development as well as audit tracking. The last question handled the quality assurance and system testing methodology. Due to the sensitive nature of healthcare services the IT professional indicated that they follow the PDSA cycle (Bahr, 2018). They plan the process related objectives and establish the processes needed to deliver the high-quality end product, develop and test processes as well as execute changes in the process, monitor the process, modify it and check whether it meets the predetermined objectives and implement actions necessary to achieve improvements in the process. The quality assurance process ensures that functional risk like user requirements, functionality, and delivery of expected results are met. It also handles non-functional risks like system performance and response times, system stability and durability and memory leaks (Bahr, 2018). The testing also looks at deployment risk that can be encountered during the delivery and installation of software and lastly it looks at compliance risks like a violation of laws, rules, regulation and industry best practices.

In conclusion, project management in healthcare helps in enhancing patient care. From the executed interview, the IT professional indicated that the best project methodology to follow is the hybrid approach because it combines waterfall planning and agile. The interview also revealed that a business analyst is essential because of skills like functional analysis and definition requirements that help in budget allocation. In terms of application developer skillset, the interview was conversant with multiple languages that assisted in imaginative thinking and the creation of secure and intuitive programs. Lastly the quality assurance process and testing following the PDSA cycle due to the sensitive nature of the healthcare system.
