Topic 7 DQ 2
Population health problems differ across populations and are influenced by many factors, including environments, socioeconomic situations, and ethnic inclinations. To minimize the adverse implications of population health problems, health policies are formulated at different times and for different purposes. An effective current health policy focusing on population health is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The policy is among the nation’s largest nutrition-based interventions serving over 6.3 million people (State of Childhood Obesity, n.d.). WIC helps women, infants, and children up to age five achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
Several components make the policy effective. Firstly, WIC deals with a vulnerable population at high risk of obesity. Relph et al. (2020) noted pregnant women and young children are at high risk of obesity due to their dependency and physical state, given that their mobility is reduced. The other component is the intervention used. WIC provides healthy foods and nutrition education besides health care and social-service referrals. In this case, it uses a comprehensive approach to reduce obesity rates among pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women and children. The third component is that WIC is updated as required by law. It must align with the latest U.S. Dietary Guidelines (State of Childhood Obesity, n.d.). Such a comprehensive approach makes WIC effective in obesity prevention.
On history and factors influencing WIC development, WIC was piloted as a supplemental food program in 1972, and the first site opened in Kentucky in 1974 (National WIC Association, 2018). Over time, legislation introduced new elements to improve the program, such as the inclusion of nutrition education in 1978. Improvements continued to be made, such as introducing a food package for exclusive breastfeeding in 1992 and new good packages consistent with the Dietary Guidelines in 2009 (National WIC Association, 2018). On the factors necessitating its development, health improvement was the primary objective. WIC was formulated and started to improve the health of pregnant mothers, infants and children as a direct response to the growing concern over malnutrition. Poverty-stricken populations (mothers and young children) were the primary target (National WIC Association, 2018). WIC serves millions of American mothers and children to reduce the risk of obesity.
