Nourine banned 10 years for refusing Olympic bout vs. Israel

Algerian judoka Fethi Nourine has been banned from competition for 10 years by the International Judo Federation after his withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics to avoid a potential bout against an Israeli opponent. Nourine withdrew from the Tokyo Games on the opening day after learning he could potentially face Olympic bronze medalist Tohar Butbul in the second round of men’s lightweight competition at the Budokan. Nourine and Benikhlef told Algerian media they quit to express support for Palestinians.

Authorities Capture, Kill Alligator Suspected of Attacking Man

Authorities have captured and killed the alligator suspected of attacking a 71-year-old Louisiana man in Hurricane Ida floodwaters two weeks ago. Then they found what appears to be human remains inside its stomach, according to a statement from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s deputies on Monday captured the 12-foot-long, 504-pound alligator near the city of Slidell, which is across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans, the statement said. This was where Timothy Satterlee Sr., 71, was attacked by an alligator in flooded waters Aug. 30, a day after Ida hit the state’s shores.

In the digital age, a mug shot can last forever online, even if someone is acquitted, or the charges are dropped. If the only time our audience sees a Black face is in a mug shot, it can have a cumulative and negative effect.

On Tuesday,  Simone Biles closed out her Olympics on her terms , as a two-time bronze medalist on beam and as the most accomplished American gymnast in history with seven medals, including four golds. Biles did not allow herself to be defined by what she did not do in Tokyo. Instead, the lasting images will be of her cheering on her teammates and competitors and  returning to competition under great scrutiny and pressure  to earn perhaps the final Olympic medal of her career.

Videos from Portland showed a crowd of demonstrators violently shut down an event where Christians gathered to pray on the waterfront – before another clash Saturday afternoon involved Antifascists and alleged Proud Boys members throwing projectiles at each other on a city street. Police officers did not intervene in either confrontation – besides a squad car sounding its siren just feet away.
