1. COURSEWORK [90%]

Students are required to undertake a study of organisational texts or talk at work. This will involve collecting data (either audio recordings or other texts), identifying an adequate approach amongst those studied in the module, and analysing the data in this light to draw out original findings. The students are expected to make significant use of lecture materials, case studies, core readings and additional readings sourced by the student themselves.

The study should draw on an analytic approach within the traditions of the organisational discourse or institutional talk programmes. The study should consider issues of relevance to our understanding of work and organisations; e.g. the discursive construction of organisational identities; the institutional character of talk; organisational storytelling; corporate rhetoric; etc.

For example, data can include one or a combination of:
• Recordings of relevant audio or video materials found on YouTube
• Organisational documents or marketing materials (e.g. official reports; company recruitment literature; adverts; product packaging; etc.)
• Websites (e.g. corporate websites, etc.)
• Audio recordings of organisational talk collected by the student
• Etc.

Marks will be assigned to the:
• introduction to, and motivation for, the research study
• account of the analytic approach adopted, including the choice, description and selection of the research data, and demonstration of fit between topic, approach and methods. Reference to and discussion of existing literature (methodological, theoretical, or empirical research) is particularly expected here.
• quality of the data analysis (which should include insightful observations; be organised into meaningful analytic themes; and be clearly evidenced by appropriate qualitative data)
• discussion of the relevance of the findings for the study of work and organisations. Reference to existing literature is again expected here to draw out the particular contribution of your project.

Approximately 50-60% of your report should be devoted to the section on analysis.

The collection and analysis of data must follow appropriate ethical protocols. All project ideas should be approved through the discussion forum.

If texts are analysed, relevant extracts need to be included in an appendix.
If recordings are analysed, relevant extracts need to be made available to the lecturer.

Note: Any assignments submitted after the specified deadline will be dealt with in accordance with the procedures set out by the School.

2. ORAL PRESENTATION [10%]

Students will give a 5-minute oral presentation of the project component of their coursework in the week beginning 6th December 2021.

By this stage it is expected that the data collection and analysis for the project should be complete. Therefore, the presentation should clearly motivate the study, outline the data collected and highlight the key findings from the analysis. The oral presentations take place at this time so that written feedback on the project can be distributed before the end of term. The feedback is designed to assist with the development of the final, written report.

Students will be allocated to a one-hour slot during which they will be asked to present their work using MS Teams. Schedules will be distributed at least one week in advance. If you miss your allocated session, then you will receive a mark of zero.
