Topic: For this paper each student will select a topic that addresses democracy and the media. Good places to look for topic ideas are the Table of Contents and the Indexes of the course textbooks. Also, in Course Resources/Shared Documents there is a document with possible topics.

Thesis Statement: Each paper should have a thesis statement: A sentence that clearly articulates the focus of the paper and sets forth a topic that will be tested, supported, and/or refuted by examples, quotations from sources, etc. For example, This paper seeks to determine if Neil Postman’s concern about society’s willingness to submit to media influence is becoming a reality.

Form: The paper should be written in the 3rd person (the research, the findings, this paper etc.) Do not write in the first person, I, me, my, etc.

sources: The paper should have at least five different sources, with a minimum of two peer reviewed journal articles. The quality of the sources will also be assessed. It is important to avoid using unknown, unreliable, or outdated sources. Wikipedia may not be used (though it’s often a good place to start to find resources). The paper should contain a minimum of 75% original thought (no more than 25% from research sources).

Length of Paper: The paper should be between 4 – 5 pages double spaced (not including the title and References page).

Structure: Try to have a clear beginning, middle and end to the paper. The format should be as follows:

Intro: Begin with general comments about the field and/or topic, then narrow the scope until the topic is addressed. The thesis typically comes at the end of the introduction and should be labeled “THESIS STATEMENT”.

Body: This section should introduce and focus on the research that addresses the central idea (thesis).

Conclusion: This section should summarize the paper and offer closing comments and conclusion.
