MID-TERM QUESTIONS:

Two violent incidents of note occurred in the month of January 2017. The first one, in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day, occurred at a nightclub in the Besiktas district of Istanbul, Turkey. Known as the Istanbul nightclub shooting, the attack occurred where hundreds of people were celebrating the New Year. At least 39 people were killed and 70 were injured. On January 17, the gunman was arrested, and ISIS claimed credit for his act.

The second one, on the evening of January 29, 2017, occurred at a mosque in the Sainte-Foy neighborhood of Quebec City, Canada. Known as the Quebec City mosque shooting, the attack occurred shortly after the end of evening prayers. Six people were killed and 19 other were injured. The gunman was arrested. However, unlike the Istanbul incident, the Quebec City gunman is NOT being charged with terrorism, since Canadian officials believe that it would be difficult to prove that the gunman’s actions were intended to intimidate or create fear in the public or a segment of the public.
