The right to have sex applies to all individuals of legal age, and safe sex education should be provided to avoid sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that between 2007 and 2011, there was an increase in chlamydia infections by 31% and syphilis by 52% among Americans above 65 years (Emanuel, 2014). A majority of geriatrics live in assisted living facilities, and often do not practice safe sex.

I will suggest a safe sex education program on use of protection to avoid STDs among geriatrics living in assisted facilities. The program will first involve teaching them the various STDs, including how they are transmitted and their effects on health (Simovska & Kane, 2015).The patients will be informed about STDs such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, pelvic inflammatory disease and HIV and the effect they have had on the well-being and the country’s economy (Jarvis, 2020). Training them on STDs will enable them to be more cautious since they will understand how unsafe sex can have adverse effects on their health.

The second intervention will involve training them on how to use protection methods such as female and male condoms. This will include demonstrating how to use the condoms to ensure they understand and prevent transmission due to improper condom use

(Simovska & Kane, 2015). They will then be taught how to check the expiry date of a condom and how to ensure its effectiveness, such as check for leaking lubricant, tiny holes, tom wrapper, foul odor, or being dry or sticky (Heath, 2019). I will also teach them about the different brands of condoms in the market and the various additives such as spermicides and flavorings. In addition, I will inform them about the different condom materials such as latex, polyurethane, polyisoprene, and non-latex and the pros and cons of each material (Simovska & Kane, 2015). They will also be taught on safe storage and proper disposal of condoms. Last but not least, I will counsel them on being faithful to one sexual partner to lower the transmission of STIs.
