For the portfolio, you are going to include a reflective analysis (not summary) on your learning in ENG 1010 and how this is shown and demonstrated through the specific items in the portfolio. Ask yourself: how do the items I’ve submitted show my learning and growth of the course learning outcomes from the syllabus? Some items above have specific aspects you must write about in your reflection. Please be sure to include those.

The final course reflection essay is a new piece of writing that must be at least 3 full pages and not more than 5 pages. It will not undergo peer review or instructor review. You may consult a tutor if you would like. The professor will not read drafts in advance. This is your opportunity to compose a fully developed new piece of writing that shows your learning, growth and improvement. Exceeding 5 pages will not result in penalty; however, not reaching the last line of page 3 will result in significant deductions.

In addition, your reflection should also address the following items in multiple paragraphs, organized and developed with supporting details and discussion of how the rest of the submitted items illustrate your learning. Your entire portfolio is a rhetorical act of persuasion that is intended to construct and illustrate your learning and growth. Now—at the end of the term—you should be able to organize, revise and edit and compose this document independently based on these instructions.

The following questions can help you begin thinking about what you might include. Don’t just answer the questions; structure your response in a cohesive essay.

Review your Midterm Essay. Did you meet the goals you set for yourself? Did you exceed them? Review what you wrote then and consider your growth between then and now.
Has your writing process changed since the beginning of the semester? What do you do differently in the process of preparing essays and writing in college versus high school? How has this impacted your overall writing quality? If it hasn’t changed, explain why.
Discuss an example of a revision you made for each writing project (that is, a change you made after you got feedback from the instructor or a tutor). Why did you make these revisions? How specifically do you think they improved your essays—and more importantly, how do they show you’ve grown as a college writer and thinker?
Review the ENG 1010 course outcomes in the syllabus. Include a discussion of where your portfolio and the writing you are submitting shows your learning in these areas.
What skills did you learn in this course that you think will help you with your future academic and professional goals?
If you could go back to the first week of the course, what would you do differently as a student and how would that change your learning and progress? What will you do at the start of ENG 1020 based on your learning this semester as a college student?
List the projects in your portfolio and rate them from strongest to weakest. Describe three observations you had after you did the rating from strongest to weakest. Be specific.
Which project do you consider the most successful in terms of your growth as a writer? Explain why.
What did you do to push your work beyond minimum requirements? Be specific by discussing one project in depth.
Identify and explain three important skills you learned during the semester and where these are shown in the portfolio.
What advice do you wish you had received from a previously successful ENG 1010 student? Why? Is this the advice you would give a future ENG 1010 student?
