Minimum requirements to earn credit:

· Length: 4-5 pages in MLA paper format (approximately 1500 words)

· No plagiarism: follow all directions in research requirements section

Purpose: To practice the mode of cause and effect; To consider audience and purpose; To practice the steps of writing an essay; To use proper grammar and spelling.

Essay: Write a 4-5 page personal essay that defines either the effects of a cause of the causes of an effect in your approved topic. The essay must have one clear thesis statement that addresses the specific main ideas of your essay in one sentence. Develop and support each main idea in its own paragraph. This is a personal essay and should use a personal voice. It should be representative of your own experiences with the topic and not researched.

Sources: Research is not required for this essay. You may complete this essay with your own knowledge of the subjects. However, if you decide to do more research (online or in any other format) you must follow these instructions. If you include any research without following these instructions, you risk earning a permanent zero on the assignment for plagiarism.

1. You must choose credible sources.

· These sources are pre-approved and may be used without asking the instructor:

· The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook

· Any official U.S. government website (.gov)

· Any book or article from NSCC’s library

· All other sources must be approved by the instructor or you risk losing points on your essay.

· You may show me the source in person or send a link by email.

2. You must indicate which parts of your essay contain source material.

· If exact words/phrases in your essay came from a source:

· Use a signal phrase to tell where you found the source material

· Use quotation marks around the words that are not your own.

· Example: The Bureau of Labor Statistics explains, “The median annual wage of registered nurses was $64,690 in May 2010.”

· If ideas in your essay came from a source, but you used your own words to explain them:

· Use a signal phrase to tell where you found the idea.

· You do not need quotation marks.

· Example: The Bureau of Labor Statistics points out that nurses who work in hospitals earn more than those who work in nursing homes.

3. At the end of your essay, you must include a list of all sources used in the essay:

· Since we have not covered MLA format yet, it does not need to be in MLA format. A list of website links and/or books is fine.

Format: Use standard spelling, grammar, and diction. Follow the MLA formatting guidelines (on setting up page numbers, title, font, etc). These guidelines will be discussed in class and are also posted on NS Online.

Rough draft requirements: Rough drafts must be typed and printed out, and they must meet the minimum length of the essay. You will lose points if your draft is not long enough, not typed, and/or not printed and ready at the beginning of class on the due date. You will not be able to spend class time going to print it and/or finishing it.

Submission: Your document must be in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format or it cannot be graded. Remember to review the penalties for submitting a late paper that are listed in the syllabus. Submit it on NS Online through the Assignment Dropbox. (More detailed directions are available as a document on the Content tab.) Emailed papers and physical copies will not be accepted.

Grading: This essay will be graded according to the course rubric, which is available on NS Online. Since there is no required research component to this essay, the grade breakdown will be: Content = 35 points; Organization = 35 points; Editing = 30 points – for a total score out of 100 points.

Extra help: If you have a specific question that can be answered in an email, send me an email. Please do not send me your entire paper in an email. If you need more help, stop by office hours, ask for an appointment, or take your paper to the Learning Center for suggestions.
