doing research for your future final essay. Your final essay should answer the question:

After each source, create an annotation for the source: a short paragraph (maximum 4
sentences) about each source, which must include:
● A brief (1-2 sentence) summary of the main point (thesis) of the source
● A brief (1-2 sentence) explanation of the relationship between the source and the thesis
statement, including how it could be used to prove the thesis statement
To format this assignment, create a Reference List containing all sources, in alphabetical order
(in accordance with APA Style requirements), with your annotation paragraphs after each
source.
Like in your first essay, organize your writing using APA formatting guidelines, including in-text
citations, end reference entries, and document formatting.

This longer writing assignment requires you to think critically about broad topics discussed in
class by creating and defending one central thesis statement. In this assignment, you will
present, in writing, an original argument that answers the following question:
“How can we pursue a more ethical and equitable world?”
Directions
In this essay, you must:
1. Create an original argument, expressed in a short, concise, and to-the-point thesis
statement in your introduction that answers the question posed above;
2. Use at least three reliable sources to defend your argument (you can use your
Bibliography sources for this but it is not required);
3. Express the importance and relevance of this argument to real life.
There are three ways to organize your final essay, as discussed below:
Essay format.
Write your argument in a general persuasive essay format, using APA Style to create a title
page, sections, paragraphs, and a Reference list. This is the format formally discussed in-class
as expected for most academic courses and programs.
Zine format.
Instead of a formal essay (and serving as the midpoint between formal and informal
organizational formats), you can format your argument as a zine—short for magazine. This is a
short and creatively organized argumentative publication that is often self-published and
distributed: some content from this course has previously been distributed through or as zines,
for example. Instead of an APA Style title page, your zine would have a front page that
describes its content and usually has an image to accompany it. Instead of an 8.5×11’’ page, as
well, zines are often on smaller paper, like a horizontal 8.5×11” page with a fold in the center to
create a kind of book. This will require some knowledge of your word processor to format your
zine. This format will still require a final References page; however, the document’s formatting is
otherwise more flexible. Please discuss the details with me if you are considering this option.
Creative format.
Instead of any formal essay, and in the interest of supporting many forms of learning and
transmission of knowledges (not just written forms), you are also able to “present” your
argument in a format of your choice, as long as it is of an equal length to a 5-to-6 page essay.
For this option, instead of a written research paper, you can (for example) record and send to
me an 8-to-10-minute video explaining your argument, proof, and secondary sources, just as
you would in written form for the paper option; you can record a staged debate following
arguments for and against your central thesis statement; you can create an art piece, closet
play, or other visual/theatrical representation of your argument; or other options available for
you. All other requirements for the assignment would the same: you would still use at least three
main sources in your work, and you would still present it clearly and assertively, with proper
vocabulary, grammar, and semantic organization taken into account.
Whichever choice you make must be, within reason, organized using APA formatting guidelines,
including in-text citations, end reference entries, and document formatting.

This assignment will test your ability to:
• Read, analyze, and discuss information from several different sources, including
secondary sources not discussed directly in class
• Create and defend and original argument/thesis
• Adhere to academic writing standards, including vocabulary, sentence structure, and
semantic organization
• Follow APA format and documentation guidelines.

Length: approximately 5-6 written pages, plus a title page and References page, to make 7-8
pages total.
