You may have heard the old biblical expression, “There is nothing new under the sun.” You might also be familiar with the more scientific version of a similar idea in the first law of thermodynamics: “Energy can neither be created nor destroyed.” And yet people make new things and have new ideas all the time. This doesn’t mean these people are magically creating something out of nothing, or suddenly saying something world-changing apropos of nothing.

No. People make wonderful new things by making them out of existing things and ideas. In other words, “new” things and ideas don’t materialize out of thin air, but new things and ideas do come about through inventive, insightful, and clever combinations of what already exists.

Take, for instance, a multi-billion dollar idea like Facebook. Did someone have to come up with the idea and design of Facebook? Sure, but Facebook happened because its creators managed to bring together certain, already-existing technologies and ideas (the internet, the phone book, increasing broadband availability, the personal computer, etc.) in just the right way at just the right time.

This paper asks you to make and explore an interesting or unknown connection between two or more areas of existing knowledge/inquiry. The less obvious that connection is, the better, since a less obvious connection will require a clear purpose and vision to bring two very different ideas or topics together.

In other words, if you choose to look at two areas that already overlap in obvious and well-established ways (an “easy” connection, for example, like, “alcoholism” and “mental health”), you will be harder-pressed to offer any of your own insights about what is interesting or significant about this connection. If the connections you research are less obvious (and make people say, “Hmmm….college football’s effects on women’s sports programs at major universities. I never thought about how those two things might be related!), then your paper will have punch, purpose, relevance, and interest from square one.

Project Requirements

Your task: Explore promising and interesting connections between two separate topics or areas of inquiry—the less obviously related these two topics are, the better, because it gives you something combine and/or connect, that is, it gives you something to do.

What does “promising and interesting” mean?: “Promising and interesting” means this connection or combination demonstrates some trace of imagination or vision on your part. You will be demonstrating that you are capable of having a constructive or productive thought and that you are capable of thinking about the future.

Finding ways to connect your two areas or topics will give your paper a sense of purpose, provide focus, and encourage you to think “outside the box.” In other words, this general structure, if observed thoughtfully, will put you in a good position for a strong thesis.

The length requirement is a minimum of 1,500 words: double-spaced, Times-New Roman Font, MLA formatting. The paper is worth 200 points, or 20% of your grade.

RESEARCH REQUIREMENT:

Your paper should discuss and cite at least 5 outside sources. You can use more, but 5 is the minimum.

The sources must be credible and appropriate for scholarly, college-level research. There will be information and activities in the Course Content to help you learn where to find quality sources through the LCC Library website. Unlike Paper 3, your sources should mostly come from the library databases or e-book collections. You will not be able to just use Google.

Citation should follow MLA formatting and guidelines. This includes correct in-text and end-of-text citation.

The way you handle and incorporate outside sources through summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation should not only demonstrate what you learned for Paper 3, but show continuing improvement.

As long as you pay attention to the rules and guidelines I have detailed above, yes. But keep in mind that because this is a research project, your topic may have to adapt and change depending on what sources you find.
