You will use the PowerPoint posted in week nine, entitle “illustration” to analyze at least five illustrated children’s books by different illustrators. If you can handle actual books rather than use online illustrated books, that will give you the best experience, but that may not be possible depending on your circumstance with Covid. Feel free to use books you are also using for your Annotated Bib. Tip: Newberry Award Winners are chosen for their spectacular illustration. Sit with your books and take notes. Then compile your project.

In some ways, this project is similar to your poetry project. You are carefully analyzing the illustrations of books you find to be well-illustrated using the terminology from our power point. Here’s a basic format for each book. I expect you to show off what you know and comment fully upon these aspects of each book.

0. Name of book and illustrator

1. What size, shape is the book? and why do you feel the illustrator chose it?

2. What “type” of a children’s book is it? how do you know? See list of types in ppt.

3. What’s going on with the cover and the end papers? Describe and think about why the illustrator chose that.

4. What paper choice did the illustrator make? Why do you think that is?

5. What is the illustrator doing with color or lack of color? Describe fully and analyze what effect it has.

6. How is the element of line being used? and to what effect? Why did the illustrator choose that?

7. How is the element of shape being used? and to what effect? Why did the illustrator choose that?

8. How is the element of texture being used? and to what effect? Why did the illustrator choose that?

9. What type(s) of media are being used? and to what effect? Why did the illustrator choose that?

10. What Layout Techniques and Arrangement methods is the illustrator using? Why did the illustrator choose that?

11. What is the state of “strength of marriage” between the text and the illustrations? How do you know?

12. Sum it up: overall, what is the illustrator’s voice in this book. Give me a half page or so that describes this books’ illustration personality.

You may paste in the questions and make complete answers to each or arrange your work like an essay. If you paste in the questions, please make my questions and your responses different font colors so I can more easily see your responses.
