Poems English Literature Paper

ESSAY (20 points) Due November 22 7 pm. One essay, 1500 words minimum, explicating a poem.

Please organize the list of poems by alphabetizing them. (Other methods might be: date of publication, form, theme. For this paper, alphabetize. I’ve changed the submission requirements to allow a second submission, so you can resend the list.)

Remember that this essay focusus on one poem, analtyzing it in some detail, and showing how it is typical of the writer’s work. If it is mostly typical, but has one aspect that’s different, mention that (of course).

This involves a close reading, lots of detail. Use my list of questions in “How to Read a Poem” and the examples in your textbook when Burt analyzes passages of poems. Remember that he is only looking at one element in each chapter, but you are doing all of them in your explication. You do a close reading of ONE poem, with examples taken from other poems on the list you read.

Explain how it is typical of the poet’s work: include themes, settings, type of poem, imagery, form (free verse vs. formal; line-length, traditional forms?

You’ll be showing how the one poem you chose to explicate is “typical.”

Typical means that the poem is like many other poems by that author. How many would you say you would need to show this? For some of these similarities a title and one line would be sufficient (e.g. line length, meter and form); most will need direct quotations. Do not use the same poems for all your examples. If you do that, you are comparing two or three poems, not showing how a poem is “typical.”

A list of poets from which to choose is posted as 30 POETS.

Make a list of the poems by this author that you read. (Minimum 50 poems.)

You should have been reading and annotating since you chose your poet.

Include a link to each poem in this list when possible.

Alphabetize this list of titles.

Write one (or two) sentences about each poem, indicating its subject, tone, and techniques that you find noteworthy.
