Selecting one poem from our class discussion and including at least two credible sources, write a textual analysis explaining how the writer conveys a specific emotion or concept through the use of poetic form (style of poem, rhythm, rhyme, division of information, etc.) and/or word choice (imagery, diction, metaphor, symbolism, allusion, etc.).
Assignment Parameters
❖ Your discussion must be a focused, thesis driven, textual analysis of the poem. Thus, you must connect all ideas through a cohesive argument, not a compiling of disparate points.
❖ Avoid a superficial summary. Instead, focus on how the poem conveys more complex feeling.
❖ Your essay must include a minimum of 2 credible sources. These sources should serve the following purposes:
o Provide important background on the author
o Provide historical context for the specific poem or genre of poetry o Establish a framework/lens through which to analyze the poem
o Offer useful criticism of the author’s poetry
❖ The best essays will have the following:
o A focused thesis that presents an argumentative claim responding directly to the
prompt
o Body paragraphs that thoroughly analyze specific textual features of the poem as
evidence for the thesis
o Supporting evidence from credible research
o A conclusion that offers the reader further implication of the argument
o Clear, grammatically correct sentence dynamics
o Proper use of MLA documentation throughout the essay and on a Work Cited
❖ Your essay should be 3 – 5 typed pages of analysis in addition to your quotes, using 12- point font and 1-inch margins, and have an original title centered at the top of the first page. Please include your name and full class number in the upper left-hand corner of the first page.
❖ All sources must be cited within the essay using MLA style parenthetical citations as well as on the Works Cited page. You may reference information I have provided in my instructional materials, but you should also cite this information as a class lecture (see
MLA guidelines for directions). My class lecture materials can be cited as additional
sources but do not count as the minimum 2 required for this assignment.

level of writing appropriate for English 102. When writing about literature remember the following:

Use formal third-person.
In the first paragraph, identify the author and title of the work you are discussing,
making sure to punctuate the title correctly.
Refer to author by first and last name on the first mention and then simply by last name
thereafter. Never refer to an author by just the first name. All literary analysis should be in present tense.
All references (paraphrases, summaries, and quotes) to the both primary and secondary sources should include MLA style parenthetical citations as well as a detailed entry on Work(s) Cited page. Be sure to follow MLA guidelines for citing poetry specifically. Remember that quotes should never stand as sentences unto themselves but be introduced with clear attributive tags.
Use your conclusion to examine implications of your argument. You should NOT restate your thesis or summarize what you’ve already said. Use the conclusion to leave your reader with a more purposeful closing to the discussion that pushes the discussion into a larger context.
