Thinking back to early in the semester, we examined the origins of Gender and Sexuality Studies in the consciousness-raising groups of second-wave feminism. During these group meetings, women began making connections between their personal lives, power dynamics and systemic inequities. From shared self-reflections about personal experiences with sexual harassment, racism, rape, classism, homophobia, etc., feminists argued that “The Personal is Political.” Too often, they argued, we interpret our position in a group, class or society as a result of a personal and familial strengths or weakness; we tend to believe our place in a socially-stratified world has more to do with natural proclivities, personality traits, genetics, and self-discipline. But social stratification, they argued, is largely the result of ordinary systems and practices that reproduce relations of domination and subordination.

Despite this insight made over 60 years ago, most of us continue to understand our lives as uniquely personal, outside of systems of inequity. We tend to think of ourselves as independent from these structures. This short essay asks you to use an intersectional and transnational feminist lens to theorize about how your “personal is political.” How have systems of power and inequity shaped your personal power?

Requirements:

Did the student use an intersectional analysis to examine at least 4 aspects (must include gender, sexuality, race and class but more aspects can be included (religion, nation, physiological abilities, etc.) of their socioeconomic status? Did they examine how their location in binary, heteropatriarchal and white supremacist gender and sexual orders has shaped how they move through the world and their personal power
Did the student use specific events and/or experiences to illustrate how their personal experience and power is connected to larger gender and sexual systems?
Did the student demonstrate the ability to analyze how their personal power, specifically in terms of gender and/or sexuality, has been shaped by systems of power?
Of the dozens of concepts that we have learned about in readings and lectures, did the student use any gender and sexuality studies scholarship to make connections between their personal experiences and systems of power?
Was the writing clear and well organized? Did they use an intro, topic sentences and conclusion effectively so that their ideas were easy to understand, while retaining nuance and complexity?
