What is the value of studying the humanities in the field of health professions?

The value of studying humanities is to help us understand and to better relate to other people. It’s the study of human society and culture, it’s the study of arts. This helps to shape and maintain relationships in helping provide effective health care. Improving medical professionals and their abilities to understand and relate to patients is a continuing ongoing issue today. By studying humanities, it will help to better listen, understand, and communicate more effectively with the patients we care for each and everyday. It can help us to become for empathetic. “When we understand, we become more empathetic (Lim & Marsaglia, 2018).”

How might a topic such as art, literature, music, dance, etc. from other time periods enhance your career and personal life in the present?

Art, literature, music, and dance from other time periods would help portray lessons of life from years past. Most patients are not as of the younger generation, so it is important to know about what had happened during other time periods to understand our patients better. Martin (2018) stated it very well by saying “Art brings us into direct communication with others”. This helps us to communicate better within our personal and professional life.

Music is significant for my personal life and literature is for my career. Music helps to put me in a better mood, calm my nerves, and provide relaxation. Music is brings me so much happiness and is a necessity in my everyday life. I need music to get me through each day. I always have to have music playing in the background while at home. Literature helps to teach me about life, learn new things, and can also provide instruction to perform a skill I may need to know or learn.

A piece of music that is very meaningful right now in my career and in my life is a song by Lauren Daigle, “Hold On To Me.” This is a song that I listen often to when I am having a hard time with work life or personal life. We have been dealing with some very difficult times in healthcare in the past two years and this song just brings me back to being grounded. Music to me is therapy for my soul.
