Knowledge of the stages of the writing process is imperative as the reading/literacy specialist develops activities to support the development of writing in students of all ages and abilities. Creating meaningful and effective activities requires a sound understanding of what is developmentally appropriate for students, as well as insight into types of activities that would spark the interest of the students involved. Additionally, sharing this information digitally allows other teachers to improve their craft to develop professionally and to positively affect their students.

For this assignment, select a grade range (PK-3, 4-6, 7-12) and create a web page for the school’s intranet teacher website that provides teachers with grade appropriate information on writing development and the writing process.

Include the following:

Describe each stage of writing development: pre-literate, emergent, transitional, fluent.
Describe the skills students develop at each stage: Scribbling/drawing, letter-like symbols, letters and strings of letters, transitional, conventional.
Identify at least two stages that would apply to students in your selected grade range and two skills within each stage that students should attain in the selected grade range.
Describe a writing activity that would assist students to develop each identified skill.
Describe the writing process as implemented in a selected grade range.
The role of the reading/literacy specialist in supporting the classroom teacher with implementing writing instructional strategies in the classroom.
